What makes a shalwar kameez hard to visualise?
A suit is several fabrics that must work together. The printed front, the plain or printed back, the sleeves, an embroidered neckline patch or daman border, the dupatta and the trouser fabric are often all different. Where the border lands on the hem, and how much of the front print shows above it, depends entirely on the kameez length you choose.
Then there are the choices a tailor asks about: how long the kameez is, how high the side slits go, whether the daman is straight or curved, and whether the bottom is a loose shalwar, a straight trouser, a cigarette pant or a tulip shalwar. Each changes the proportions of the whole outfit. For men, the same fabric looks very different as a classic collar kameez with a full shalwar than as a band collar kurta with straight trousers.
