Abayas are long and loose, and the fabrics they are made from (nida, crepe, georgette, chiffon, linen blends) are often plain or tone-on-tone. On a swatch they look almost identical. Worn, they behave very differently.
What makes an abaya hard to judge from a swatch?
Fabric fall. An abaya is mostly fabric hanging from the shoulders, so how it drapes is the design. Nida and crepe fall straight and heavy; chiffon floats and moves; linen holds creases. Opacity. Many abaya fabrics are layered or lined because a light colour or thin weave can show through. A swatch on a table hides this. Modest silhouette. The cut must stay loose at the bust, hips and arms while still looking intentional, and small choices (sleeve width, a belt, a slit) change how modest and how formal it reads. Subtle detail. Lace, piping, beading or embroidery is usually confined to sleeves, cuffs or the front edge, and needs to look refined rather than busy.
